The mission of the Stickney Fire Department is to safeguard the lives and property of the citizens of Stickney, by providing fire prevention and public education programs, effective and efficient fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue and other emergency services.
As you can see by our mission statement, public education plays a very important role in the protection of our citizens and their property. The Stickney Fire Department offers several services and programs to our citizens and community groups to help with this mission. Our firefighter's visit each of our grammar schools and pre-schools each year during fire prevention week. We also provide programs to our senior organizations ranging from home safety to escaping their homes in the event of a fire. The Department also offers public CPR classes each year. The Department also has members that are nationally trained and certified through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
The Stickney Municipal Code requires a smoke detector in all buildings of residential or mixed occupancy having any residential units.
Not less than one smoke detector shall be installed in each single-family residential unit and multiple dwelling units as defined in the comprehensive zoning ordinance of the village. A detector should be installed on the ceiling and at least six (6) inches from any wall or on a wall located from six (6) to twelve (12) inches from the ceiling and within fifteen (15) feet of all rooms used for sleeping and with not less than one detector per living level.
All multiple dwelling (apartments) and buildings of mixed occupancy having any residential units shall contain not less than one smoke detector at the uppermost ceiling of all interior stairwells. All smoke detectors shall be installed on the ceiling at least six (6) inches from the wall or on the wall located from six (6) to twelve (12) inches from the ceiling.
It is against the law for any person to remove batteries from any smoke detector or in any way make inoperable any smoke detector or fire detector, except for the building owner, manager or agent in the normal procedure of replacing batteries.
All dwellings must have a carbon monoxide detector placed no more than fifteen (15) feet from any room used for sleeping. It is the responsibility of the owner to supply and install the carbon monoxide detector. It is the responsibility of the tenant to test and provide general maintenance of the carbon monoxide detector.

Practice E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home)
Everyone should have an exit plan in the event of a fire in their home and/or work place. You should practice this plan with your family at least twice a year. You should know two ways out of every room in your house and work place. Make sure you know how to get out of the building if your first way is blocked by smoke or fire. If you can't get out you need to know what to do. NEVER HIDE, GO OUTSIDE!!! Once you are outside you need to have a family meeting place. Once you are all there, you need to know who to call 9-1-1. Tell the operator your address, phone number, name and what the problem is. If you are trapped in the house, call 9-1-1 if you can safely get to a phone and let the dispatcher know where you are.
